Kitchen Trend spotting in Cologne

The kitchen came to life at the co-located imm and LivingKitchen fairs in Cologne, Germany this January. imm bills itself as the home interiors design and trends show and while its focus has traditionally been furniture, many exhibitors went out of their way to create spectacular displays featuring complete room design and settings to show off the latest in furniture, accessories and everything for beautiful and functional interior spaces. As a logical extension of imm the organizers, Koelnmesse, added a brand new show to address one of the most important rooms in the home, the kitchen, aptly naming the event the LivingKitchen.

One of the interesting programming notes was that this design-focused event also included some presentations on lightweight furniture manufacturing. This technology is positioned as a major opportunity for the furniture industry. The suggestion is that lightweight construction in furniture removes design barriers and opens export opportunities for European manufacturers as a result of lower shipping costs.

Many European countries are benefiting from a buoyant economy and the positive economic outlook was reflected in the attendance and upbeat mood throughout the six-day event. The shows featured a unique combination of furnishing and kitchen spaces, an innovative mix of manufacturers’ presentations and interactive programming. 138,000 professional buyers and private visitors from 128 countries flocked to the exhibitions halls.

It is widely acknowledged that North America follows European trends with a three to five year lag although that cycle is shortening and Canada has always been well ahead of the US in embracing European styling cues. We took a look at what we should be expecting Canadian buyers to ask for in the next couple of years.

One of the key trends we observed at LivingKitchen is that the kitchen’s role as the central point for family activity and living space continues to gain importance. The transitions between the kitchen and living space are disappearing completely. Cabinetry designed to be functional for cooking is also taking on a built-in style that allows the traditional kitchen functions to be out of sight when not in use.

The green trend manifests itself in energy efficient appliances and intelligent and programmable kitchen accessories. Technology, such as computers, audio and television has also found its way into the new kitchen. Say hello to LED lighting, it’s everywhere and brilliantly integrated. We also observed many applications of natural materials, and rejoice… wood is making a comeback and now in its natural colours as opposed to dark stains. Silky matt finishes with a warm and earthy appearance and combinations of whites accented with vibrant colours were popular style directions.

One might say that almost anything goes in kitchen design, but the key message is that more is going on in the kitchen than ever before.

Woodworking’s sister publication, Canadian Kitchen & Bath will feature a full report on European kitchen design trends in its Spring 2011 issue. If you are not already a subscriber, drop us a line at circulation@kleisermedia.com.
