LIGNA, interzum draw big crowds

The important, back-toback woodworking industry trade shows in Germany this spring – interzum in Cologne and LIGNA in Hannover – lived up to their billing as important and influential industry events.

Attendance at both shows was up significantly from 2009, which is good news and speaks to a continuing recovery of the industry. The recession has affected everyone and trade shows too were not immune and have seen attendance and exhibitor numbers drop over the past couple of years. But the turnaround is taking hold and organizers noted significant improvements at the big spring shows. In fact, interzum reported record attendance. interzum with its 1,434 exhibitors saw 52,400 visitors, while LIGNA and its 1,765 exhibitors had 90,000 visitors.

interzum is a major show for interiors and furniture making and once again showcased a wide variety of trends and innovations in seven large halls. From digital printing on rigid boards, paper laminates to wood tape for new edgebanders, a focus on lightweight construction, new ergonomics and functionality through motion systems that respond to light pressure and increased electrification of furniture – both via innovative lighting solutions and to power devices – were among the many trends at the show. Once again, interzum has shown it is an important event for companies to showcase and introduce new product innovations.

LIGNA, with its focus on machinery and slogan ‘Making more out of Wood’ offered a vast outdoor exhibit and 13 large halls full of innovations. From highly automated equipment centres, CNC systems, 5-axis CNC technology and a growing number of multi-function machines as well as increased use of lasers (for example in edgebanding) and even an increase in the use of waste products from production for fuel, LIGNA offered something for everyone. From individuals to small shops and large operations, everyone was sure to see something new and exciting at this year’s show.

Then there was ‘Handwerk, Holz & mehr’ (Craft, Wood & more), a show within the show with everything a skilled tradesman and business owner could possibly want. From woodworking machines, tools and accessories to innovative processes, techniques and applications for wood and wood-panel products, from software solutions, services and training courses to a packed supporting program with an exciting line-up of special events and presentations.
