The Woodworking Machinery Association, part of the German Machinery and Plant Association VDMA, is – together with the partner Deutsche Messe AG – organizers of LIGNA. The Deutsche Messe A.G. is responsible for the economic side, the association for the expert side. Woodworking asked VDMA to talk about their expectations for LIGNA.
Woodworking machinery producers from around the globe are looking forward to LIGNA, the number one event for the industry, which will he held in Hannover, Germany May 11-15.
Spread over some 120,000 square metres, LIGNA is both a source of inspiration and a driver for innovation for more than 1,500 exhibitors, more than 50% of which are from abroad, and their customers from the woodworking industry.
Some of the LIGNA superlatives that impress beyond the woodworking industry include thousands of live machinery presentations; up to 100-metre long, fully functioning furniture and window plants for lot-size 1 production and exhibitors from more than 40 countries and visitors from all over the world.
Wolfgang Poeschl, chairman of the VDMA’s Wood Processing Machines Division (German Woodworking Machinery Manufacturers Association) and chairman of the Management Board of WEINIG A.G., says LIGNA offers a complete range of woodworking machinery and tools - from handheld circular saws to saw mills or wooden composite plants - as well as forestry machinery for harvesting wood, applicable materials and automation technology. LIGNA is also the most extensive fair for ‘energy from wood,’ and attracts industry expert visitors from all over the world.
‘Surprisingly Versatile,’ one of this year’s themes, focuses on the processing of plastics, composites and other materials as industry manufacturers increasingly encounter non-traditional materials. Machine and tooling manufacturers will exhibit products to address these challenges and will be prepared to discuss solutions.

Canada and the U.S.
LIGNA is an important destination for expert visitors from North America and LIGNA exhibitors, specifically members of the German Machinery and Plant Association VDMA, continue to look to North America as an area for strong growth.
The U.S. was the third most important export market for German woodworking machinery producers after China and Russia with exports of 144 million Euros, an increase of 22% over the previous year. And sales to Canada came in at an even more impressive (per capita) 21 million Euros. That means that North America represents about 10 percent of German exports and growing.
North America is a hotspot for investments in all areas of the trade and if TTIP (Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership between Europe and the U.S.) is passed, it will further boost trade.
VDMA is also working on eliminating the need for third party certification of machines imported to Canada.
