Zachery Lush, a student at Fletcher’s Meadow Secondary School, Brampton, Ont. has won The Best of Show Award, in the 2015 AWFS Fresh Wood Student Competition after judges reviewed the projects of 40 finalists from 21 different high schools and colleges in the U.S. and Canada.
The 2015 edition of AWFS Fair in Las Vegas, Nevada from July 22-25, just wrapped up after four busy days of showcasing new developments and advances that are driving the secondary woodworking market and featuring the innovative technologies, products, and services that are transforming the industry.
The show features nearly 600 exhibitors and 130 first-time exhibitors as well as a sold-out show floor that was 20 per cent larger than the previous show.
And among the big winners were Canadian students from Fletcher's Meadow Secondary School in Brampton, Ont. who earned a Best in Show, three Firsts and one Second place at AWFS Fair’s Fresh Wood student woodworking competition.
This is the second time in a row students from that school have earned top honours at AWFS Fair, which this year saw more than 200 entries from 44 schools from across the U.S. and Canada.
The Fresh Wood student woodworking competition is open to full-time students in an accredited high school or post-secondary woodworking or related program and part-time students in an accredited post-secondary woodworking or related program, who are transitioning into a career in woodworking or design within North America.
The competition has six categories at both school levels: Case Goods, Seating, Open, Design for Production, Tables and Special Theme: Musical Instruments.
Outstanding construction and design achievements by students from leading high school and post-secondary woodworking programs in North America, all vying for prizes, were displayed at the show. AWFS sponsors the biennial Fresh Wood woodworking competition for high school and post secondary students in conjunction with the AWFS Fair for the purpose of showcasing student woodworking talent and introducing students who are interested in woodworking careers to the industry and to a national trade show.
