Old wood gets new life as reclaimed flooring at Historic Woods |
“Let the past guide your future.” That’s the approach Historic Woods Inc., a wood flooring company that specializes in reclaimed wood and new wood products, has taken to fuel its growth. Founded in 2005, the Shelburne, Ontario-based company occupies a 10,000-square-foot factory. From it, the small custom shop currently supplies between 150,000- and 200,000-square-feet of wood flooring product annually to a mainly residential market.

That, in three words, is the business strategy behind Vancouver’s Jabez Furniture & Design, an upmarket custom furniture design/build shop that caters to the city’s designers and architects. You’ve got a unique idea for what you want in a dining table but can’t find it off the shelf? The joinery gurus at Jabez — owner Violet Sexsmith and managers Joe Edwards and Michael Petersen — can make it happen. “We just finished a design for a chair that a client wanted,” says Sexsmith, president of Jabez. The client, she says, wanted to base the design on a chair she had seen elsewhere. “In this case, it wasn’t so much the chair she liked but the curve of the legs — the way the back was sculpted. I look at pieces as lines and then I reduce that down to a 3-D computer-aided design file.” What follows is a collaborative effort between designer and client.
