WIA launches education grants program

The Wood Industry Association (WIA) has announced the launch of its James Scarlett Memorial School Grant Program, which provides funding to educational institutions for purchasing woodworking machinery, software, supplies, and/or supporting an industry-related school trip. This initiative reaffirms WIA’s dedication to supporting hands-on educational opportunities and bolstering programs in woodworking, cabinetry, furniture, industrial design and related fields.
“We believe that quality equipment, materials, and shop and field experiences spark student engagement and open doors.” said Jessica Freeseman, chair of WIA’s Education Committee. “This school grant program is designed to help schools unlock those opportunities by buying key tools, software, and machinery - so students can explore what’s possible in woodworking and design.”
“We are thrilled to support schools as they build and enhance programs that bring woodworking education to life,” said Joe Hammock, chair of WIA. “By investing in machinery, supplies, and immersive experiences, we’re helping institutions deliver real-world skills and inspiration to their students.”

Program highlights
• Eligible institutions: Accredited K–12 public or private schools, recognized educational non-profits, and post-secondary technical or community colleges in North America that offer an existing or developing woodworking-focused program.
• Purpose of funds: Grants may be used for woodworking machinery, software licenses, supplies, or to support an industry-related school field trip.
• Application deadline: January 31, 2026 at midnight EST.
• Evaluation criteria: Applications will be reviewed based on estimated impact on students and the community, financial need, program quality, and administrative support.
