AWMAC's Northern Alberta Chapter celebrates Awards of Excellence

AWMAC’s Northern Alberta Chapter celebrated its 2nd annual Awards of Excellence last month. The ceremony was held in Edmonton, Alberta at the Coast Edmonton Plaza, just steps away from Rogers Place.
To change things up this year, the theme was Groovin’ at the Plaza, and encouraged 60s fashion choices. The hotel went above and beyond to provide a British menu.
This year, the chapter also awarded two Outstanding Service Awards.
The first was to newly retired Ron Matenchuk, formerly of MatchWorks Wood Products. During his many years as an AWMAC member, Matenchuk was always the first to volunteer for skills, convention planning and to offer materials for projects. He also served as the Northern Alberta Director.
The second award was presented to Janice Manuel, also recently retired, from Northern Alberta Institute of Technology’s (NAIT) Cabinetmaking Department.
Manuel represents the cornerstone of apprentice training for Alberta’s cabinetmakers and NAIT’s Apprenticeship Program. She organized and ran the Northern Alberta Apprentice Contest every year and has been involved in several initiatives, including Skills Alberta.
There was also a contest for best costume. First place went to by Sandy Davis of Upper Canada Forest Products. Second place went to Mark Whitman from McMurray Interiors and Jason Bassett from Madsen’s Custom Cabinets placed third.
Next year, the Northern Alberta Chapter hopes to build on another successful event and offer awards in even more categories.
Joe George of McMurray Interiors, the MC for the evening, did a masterful job.
